The ITR Foundation Poll shows tremendous support for conservative candidates up and down the ballot.
For Immediate Release - October 6, 2022
WEST DES MOINES, IA – The most recent Iowans for Tax Relief Foundation Poll, conducted by Cygnal, shows Governor Kim Reynolds is growing more popular while President Joe Biden remains unpopular. Iowans support a wide range of conservative candidates and policy measures, including spending limits on local governments to control property taxes.
Governor Reynolds was the most popular person tested and has a high net favorability. Reynolds leads by 20.6 points on the gubernatorial ballot over Democrat nominee Deidre DeJear (58.6 to 38.0).
ITR President Chris Hagenow said, "The ITR Foundation Poll shows tremendous support for conservative candidates up and down the ballot. The Generic Ballot tested at +17 for the GOP, indicating the strongest political environment for Republicans than the state has seen for decades."
President Biden continues to be unpopular with Iowa voters. 64 percent of Iowa voters disapprove of the President's job performance. Donald Trump would win a hypothetical rematch with Joe Biden by 10 points, up from an 8-point win in 2020.
In other statewide races:
- Senator Chuck Grassley holds a 54.1 to 39.7 lead over Democrat Mike Franken.
- Republican Brenna Bird holds a 45.7 to 42.6 point lead over incumbent state Attorney General Tom Miller.
- State Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig leads Democrat John Norwood 51.7 to 32.3
The top issue as Iowans head to the polls next month remains inflation, as abortion has dropped in importance and healthcare has increased.
"The previous ITR Foundation poll from July was fielded shortly after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs. Since that poll, the electorate in Iowa has shifted to the right and are prepared to emphatically re-elect conservative leadership," Hagenow added. "Iowa voters are clearly focused on the fallout from the Biden economy, with inflation and the cost of living being the top issue deciding voter preference."
A majority of Iowans strongly oppose canceling existing college loan debt (57.9 percent) but support the proposed constitutional amendment adding the "right to keep and bear arms" to our state constitution (62.2 percent) and setting limits on local governments (56.1 percent). Even a plurality of Democrats would approve local government limits to control the growth of property taxes.
ITR FOUNDATION POLL METHODOLOGY: This probabilistic survey was conducted October 2 – 4, 2022, with 600 likely general election voters. It has a margin of error of ±3.95%. Known registered voters were interviewed via IVR and SMS. This survey was weighted to a likely general election voter universe.
