ITR Foundation Poll Shows Iowa’s Political Landscape Remains Strongly Republican
A recent Iowans for Tax Relief Foundation Poll, conducted by Cygnal, reveals Iowa’s political environment continues to favor Republicans.
The poll shows a Republican lead of +8% on the generic ballot, with inflation (21%) being the top concern for voters, followed by illegal immigration (16%) and threats to democracy (15%).
Vice President Kamala Harris’ favorability stands at 43% favorable and 57% unfavorable, slightly better than President Biden’s image in July. However, her support among Unaffiliated voters is negative (-9). Former President Donald Trump’s favorability has improved, with a 50% favorable and 49% unfavorable rating, gaining significant ground among women and non-college voters.
In the presidential ballot, President Trump’s vote share remains unchanged from the previous ITR Foundation Poll at 51%. Trump’s lead over Harris stands at nearly 7%. Since securing the Democrat nomination, Harris has made gains with Unaffiliated voters and improved her standing with men and college-educated women.
ITR President Chris Hagenow said, “Voter preferences in Iowa are nearly unchanged since the summer. Donald Trump stands ready to once again win Iowa and Republicans are poised to maintain or even grow their wide legislative majorities.”
Support for key tax protection measures in Iowa remains strong. Seventy percent of voters favor requiring a supermajority to raise taxes, and 69% support a hard 2% annual property tax cap. A majority of both Democrats and Republicans support these tax limitations. A plurality of voters support the flat tax amendment, with 44% supporting and 29% opposed.
Hagenow added, “The supermajority amendment has broad backing, crossing political lines. Many Democrats and Independents share the Republican view that increasing taxes should be a much more difficult process. While the left often pushes back on tax cuts, they are equally opposed to the idea of raising taxes.”
